Thank you to Toyota Motor Manufacturing Canada for inviting our association to tour the Cambridge plant. It was so interesting to see the behind the scenes work that is involved in creating these magnificent cars that we drive. The museum gave a great history of Toyota, followed by a video to see the different people and jobs involved, ending with a guided tram ride through the plant.

Out of the Box Networking Luncheon Series

Our tour started at the Visitor Centre on a motorized tram tour through South Weld and North Assembly, two of the most visually impressive shops in Cambridge.

Hearing about how TMMC manufactures some of the best-built vehicles in the world is one thing... experiencing it for yourself is another!

A gourmet boxed luncheon was provided upon departure of the tour. Thanks to Joanne Atkins (Special Projects) for arranging for our group to tour!

Jackie Gill, Editor-in-Chief of Draft Canada
Guest Speaker
  • September 5, 2019

Thank you so much to Jackie Gill, Editor-in-Chief of Draft Canada for explaining to us about how she makes a story stand out - through her writing and also branding, presence and strategy. As Jackie says, "I'm a giant word nerd who can help with it all."

She first put crayon to paper to tell stories at the tender age of 6 and hasn't stopped since. As a grown-up, she swapped that crayon for a word processor, reporting all the news that's fit to print for the St. Thomas Times-Journal as a journalist, making insurance sound sexy as a marketer for Canada Life and Manulife and started her own writing business supporting local startups in Kitchener-Waterloo, most recently jumping head-first into the role of lead editor for a new digital media platform, Draft Canada.

When Everything Went Wrong, Tiffany Dawn Kept Going
A Member's Story
  • August 7, 2019

Thank you to our member Tiffany for sharing her story. This year, her grandfather passed away. He died at 91. He was her everything. He was an amazing role model and example of how to live your life.

Her marriage ended because of mental illness. Depression’s hard to understand, and when you’re married to it, you learn a lot. Sometimes you look at yourself like, is there something I could have done earlier? Am I enabling it? You sometimes blame yourself. We’ve been putting a lot of resources into getting him help and counselling.

Tiffany's story was featured in Draft Canada. This article was a very difficult and transparent article about some difficulties in Tiffany's life and how she used those misfortunate moments as momentum forward. Read Tiffany's Story.

Thank you to our member Nancy Koebel for giving us an update on your volunteer work with Oktoberfest and the other events that surround it. Kitchener-Waterloo has benefited greatly from your hard work these past 29 years! From the Thanksgiving Day parade, the Santa Claus parade and Women of the Year events, there are many areas where help is needed. Although K-W Oktoberfest Inc. (a not-for-profit community corporation) employs eight full-time staff, the Festival would not be possible without the dedication of more than 500 year-round volunteers and 1,300 community and service club volunteers to stage Canada’s Greatest Bavarian Festival: Kitchener-Waterloo Oktoberfest.
